Cross-University Teaching Plan by Professor Vivian Tien Selected for Excellence in the Ministry of Education’s 2026 Career Guidance Lesson Plan Competition, Inspiring University Students to Explore New Career Possibilities Through “My Bright Future”
To enhance the quality of career guidance and education in higher education institutions, the Youth Development Administration (YDA) of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education organized the 2026 Career Guidance Lesson Plan Competition for Colleges and Universities. A total of 17 lesson plans were selected for recognition of excellence. Among them was “My Bright Future”, a collaborative lesson plan developed by Professor Vivian Tien, together with faculty members from four other universities. This recognition highlights the outstanding achievements of cross-university collaboration in career education and acknowledges the faculty members’ efforts to translate career development concepts into innovative teaching practices. It also provides valuable practical experiences for exchange and reference in career education across higher education institutions.
The award-winning lesson plan, “My Bright Future”, originated from the five faculty members’ participation in the 2026 Advanced Training Program for Career Guidance Seed Teachers in Colleges and Universities. During the program, they explored the increasingly diverse composition of first-year university students, including older learners, international students, Taiwanese students, and students with disabilities. This diversity reflects differences across national, cultural, and generational backgrounds, presenting challenges for existing career guidance materials in meeting the needs of contemporary classrooms. In response, the five teachers adopted an innovative approach grounded in interdisciplinary learning and intergenerational exchange to help students envision their future selves. A key feature of the course is its use of a digital picture-book platform, through which students share and explore their life experiences, engage in dialogue, and learn from one another. By listening to others’ life stories, students have opportunities to recognize their own strengths, appreciate different perspectives, and use digital tools to create picture books that transform their visions of the future into achievable learning goals.
Professor Tien explained that the lesson plan stood out because it places cultural and social diversity at its foundation and integrates cross-generational and cross-cultural perspectives into career guidance. Designed to respond to students from diverse backgrounds, the course offers an inclusive learning experience based on the idea that “one life can inspire another.” Through an online picture-book platform, students create a project titled Myself in Five Years. Beginning with reflections on their own cultural backgrounds and personal values, they gradually engage with other cultures and develop a stronger foundation for their professional competencies. Through this competition, Professor Tien also expressed her hope that more educators interested in career guidance would continue to develop innovative lesson plans, helping students explore their futures and translating educational ideas into practical and meaningful teaching strategies.
Given the diverse backgrounds of students in our department, career guidance courses in the department place particular emphasis on respecting students’ individual life experiences and encouraging them to explore their cultural identities. The courses also help students strengthen their language proficiency and technological skills while preparing for potential career pathways in education, tourism, business, and international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Through these learning experiences, students develop intercultural communication and teamwork skills while learning to listen, provide constructive feedback, and grow through interactions with others. Professor Tien believes that integrating the award-winning lesson plan into the department’s career guidance curriculum would be highly appropriate and could generate rich exchanges among students from diverse cultural backgrounds. In a multicultural society undergoing rapid change, “My Bright Future” offers students an opportunity to envision and shape a future that genuinely reflects their own aspirations, strengths, and possibilities.
