Just like this bicycle!」(祝福妳所有的夢想都能實現,就像這輛自行車一樣!),這份溫暖的心意令她深受感動,也讓她體會到,六天的國際交流除了拓展自己的國際視野外,也促進文化理解與人際連結的意義。
Hsin-Tung Lo Participates in the International Children’s Games (ICG)
Gaining International Experience and Demonstrating Cross-Cultural Communication and Problem-Solving Skills
In the summer of 2026, Hsin-Tung Lo, a student in the Class of 2025, participated in the International Children’s Games (ICG) as an international liaison officer. She assisted the delegation from Sopron, Hungary, with transportation, accommodation, and itinerary arrangements. Through her service at this international sporting event, Lo gained practical experience in international event reception and administrative coordination. She also strengthened her communication and problem-solving skills, developed greater adaptability, and broadened her international perspective through cross-cultural interactions. Her experience demonstrates how university students can actively engage in international exchange and expand their learning beyond the classroom.
As a first-time international liaison officer, Lo initially felt nervous and under pressure when assigned to assist the delegation leader and deputy mayor. She was concerned about whether her English proficiency and lack of practical experience would be sufficient for the responsibilities. During the event, she handled various logistical challenges, including confirming meeting points, coordinating bus air-conditioning arrangements, and resolving issues related to hotel accommodation and transportation procedures. These tasks required her to assess situations promptly, coordinate with relevant personnel, and identify appropriate solutions. Through these experiences, she came to understand that international event coordination requires not only attention to detail and a strong sense of responsibility, but also proactive communication, adaptability, and problem-solving skills. By communicating openly and remaining willing to learn, she gradually gained confidence and valuable practical experience.
Lo also made an effort to communicate with the Hungarian team members in their native language, using the phrase “Holnap találkozunk” (“See you tomorrow”). Her initiative was warmly received by the delegation. This interaction helped her recognize that successful cross-cultural communication depends not solely on language proficiency, but also on respect, sincerity, and a willingness to engage with people from different cultural backgrounds.
During the event, Lo gradually developed close rapport with the Hungarian delegation’s coaches, Niki, József, and Bálint. Their conversations covered cultural differences between Taiwan and Hungary, as well as personal interests and future aspirations. The coaches learned that Lo enjoys classical piano music and had once drawn a portrait of the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. They also remembered her dream of owning a road bicycle. On the final day of the event, they presented her with a commemorative polo shirt accompanied by a heartfelt note that read, “We wish all your dreams come true!! Just like this bicycle!”
The thoughtful gesture deeply moved Lo. Reflecting on the six-day exchange, she recognized that international engagement not only broadens one’s global perspective, but also fosters mutual cultural understanding and meaningful human connections. Lo noted that language proficiency is not the only prerequisite for participating in international exchange. Even when one cannot yet express oneself fluently, taking the first step with sincerity and actively seeking solutions to challenges can create valuable opportunities for learning and personal growth.
The department places great emphasis on developing students’ professional knowledge, language proficiency, and international competence. It encourages students to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations through diverse learning opportunities, including international sporting events and volunteer services. Lo’s participation in the International Children’s Games exemplifies the learning outcomes that students can achieve through international service, particularly in cross-cultural communication, team coordination, and problem-solving.
Her experience also reflects the department’s educational commitment to helping students broaden their international perspectives, build confidence, and respond to the needs of an increasingly diverse society with professionalism and compassion. Lo’s performance is a testament to the department’s efforts to nurture capable and globally minded young people. The department hopes that her experience will inspire more students to participate in international exchange activities, strengthen their confidence, and build meaningful connections with the world.
