Esther Tseng Strives for her Educational Career

Alumna Esther Tseng is currently studying in TCU’s Postgraduate Institute of Education. Aiming to be a teacher, she took courses on the Educational Program for Secondary School Teachers at the university while at the same time studying for her degree in the Department of English Language and Literature. Now she is taking another big step in her educational career.

Looking back at her undergraduate studies, Esther realizes she learned many things. Through studying literature, she absorbed lots of wisdom from the ancients and took it as a kind of advice for her life. Meanwhile, studying English listening, speaking, studying, and writing were also important. The professors taught in English, which really helped her listening. In the listening and speaking classes, the professors always encouraged the students to speak their opinions without looking at written drafts. Reading is a crucial study skill, and though literary works are usually long, Esther and her classmates gradually learned to read them almost without the need for a dictionary, yet were still able catch their main points. During the writing classes, the professors demanded that the students write at least 1200 words for homework per week. Esther remembers that when she wrote about things that touched her, her thoughts overflowed. Thus, she naturally noticed her typing skills and speed improve.

When Esther was a senior, she took part in the annual graduation drama performances, which gave her a chance a chance to stand on the stage and speak English in front of large audiences. These performances helped her discover that there are still lots of things she should learn. In order to enhance her abilities, she decided to apply for the Master’s Degree in TCU’s Institute of Education.

The study load in graduate school is much heavier than that on a BA degree. As a result, Esther learned how to use a many-sided approach to deal with things, and can now accept different opinions with a broader mind. At the same time, she is also aware that for her there is still lots of room for improvement in areas besides education and teaching. Because of these impacts, Esther tells herself that she should have a humble heart to accept others’ advice. There is an old analect which says, “When I walk along with two others, they may serve me as my teachers. I will select their good qualities and follow them; I will notice their bad qualities and avoid them.”

After finishing graduate school, Esther hopes she can complete her internship and get the teacher license as soon as possible, so that she can become a light to others.

Finally, Esther hopes all DELL students can find their own directions in the future. Reach the goal and fly!
