Student Hsin-Tung Lo Volunteers at the Club Crew World Championships, Building Bridges Through International Communication

The 15th Club Crew World Championships (CCWC) was held at Liyu Lake in Hualien, Taiwan, from August 29 to September 6, 2026. The event brought together approximately 5,800 athletes and team officials from 21 countries, making it a major international sporting event for both Taiwan and the local community. To prepare for the event, Hsin-Tung Lo, a student from the Class of 2025 (114th cohort) in the department, completed a 16-hour bilingual sports English workshop organized by the Hualien County Government on December 6–7, 2025. Her participation in the training prepared her to serve as a volunteer in the airport reception and international liaison team for the championships.

During the event, Lo assisted teams from around the world with reception services and other event-related matters. Through this experience, she gained valuable practical skills in intercultural communication and event coordination. Interacting with athletes from different countries and representatives of international organizations also helped her recognize the importance of taking the initiative to communicate and build meaningful connections with others.

Lo shared that one of the highlights of her experience was meeting Ms. Anna Sokratous, Deputy Treasurer of the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) and President of the European Dragon Boat Federation (EDBF), at the event banquet. Although she initially felt hesitant about approaching such an important international representative, she eventually gathered the courage to introduce herself. After their conversation, Anna warmly referred to Lo as her “international daughter,” creating a heartwarming and unforgettable memory of cross-cultural friendship.

Lo also assisted Mr. Keith Dalip, Chair of the International Dragon Boat Federation Athletes with Disabilities Commission, in finding his assigned seat at the banquet. Rather than feeling flustered, the two of them searched for the seat together while chatting and laughing along the way. When they finally found the correct seat, they both burst out laughing, turning the experience into another warm and memorable moment of international exchange. These experiences taught her that volunteering at an international sporting event requires more than simply carrying out assigned duties. It also calls for attentiveness, adaptability, problem-solving skills, and the courage to communicate proactively with people from different backgrounds.

A statement by Claudio Schermi, President of the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF), left a lasting impression on Lo: “If doing something without communication, then it’s better not doing anything.” His words encouraged her to reflect on the essential role of communication in teamwork and international exchange.

Looking back on her volunteer experience, Lo learned how to assist participants from different countries while developing her ability to respond to unexpected situations, from reception services to on-site problem-solving. She came to understand that communication is not merely a means of completing tasks; it is also the starting point for understanding others, resolving problems, and building friendships.

Her experience demonstrates how international volunteer opportunities can broaden students’ horizons and strengthen their intercultural competence. These outcomes also reflect the department’s educational goals: encouraging students to participate in international sporting events as volunteers, developing their international communication and problem-solving skills, and helping them gain the confidence to use English and other foreign languages in a variety of real-world situations to communicate effectively and assist others.
